Day #8 (August 8, 2022): The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City Money Museum offers free tours. We enjoyed seeing machines process and sort out old bills to be shredded. We’ve never seen so much cash in one place! The kids got a kick out of the souvenir at the end of the tour: a bag of shredded money. We quickly walked around the historic Union Station and admired its stunning beauty and architecture and tried to imagine ourselves boarding a train out West. To officially wrap up our tour of Kansas City, we headed back across the Kansas state line to Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que. Emily was a little caught off guard at first when we pulled up to the gas station. Did the GPS misdirect us?!? No, the infamous restaurant was inside the gas station. To keep the playing field level, we again tried a similar spread of BBQ as Arthur Bryant’s and Q39: brisket, burnt ends, smoked turkey, pulled pork, ribs, baked beans, cole slaw, and French fries. Everything was delicious. Emily thought Joe’s coleslaw was the best of the 3 restaurants; however, we all agreed we preferred Q39’s BBQ in comparison to Joe’s. Arthur Bryant’s had the best baked beans of the 3 restaurants, but otherwise Q39 was the clear winner for everything else. We had not ever heard of Burnt Ends before our arrival to Kansas City, and we loved our introduction to such a KC delicacy!
